Rape convict Ram Rahim granted 50 days parole, 9th release in 4 years

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, currently serving a 20-year jail term for the rape of two women, has been granted parole for 50 days, marking his seventh release in the past 24 months and the ninth in the last four years. Last year alone, Singh was granted parole on three occasions, totaling 91 days, with releases in November, July, and January to attend former Dera chief Shah Satnam's birth anniversary. The January 2023 release stirred controversy, with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar asserting that parole, if obtained following due procedures, is the convict's "right."

In 2022, the BJP-led government in Haryana granted parole to Ram Rahim Singh three times, with releases in October, June, and February. The October release, coinciding with panchayat polls, drew attention as several BJP leaders attended a 'virtual satsang' hosted by Singh, prompting criticism from the opposition. The continuous parole grants raise questions about the legal and procedural aspects surrounding the release of a convicted rapist.
